When the door did open, bringing with it a mixture of loud voices, we had just put ourselves back together. Arrow and I exchanged a satisfied smile and a thumbs up.

Jett and Sam bustled in, followed by half a dozen others seeking a private place to smoke a joint and kick back away from the noise and chaos of downstairs. The second Jett stepped into the room, she shot us both a knowing grin and wagged her finger like we were naughty children.

“I was wondering where you two had gotten off to.” She swiped my drink from the table and finished it off. “Or should I say, where you were getting off.”

“Shut up, dude,” I laughed, squishing closer to Arrow on the couch as everyone piled in.

Loud drunken conversation filled the room. A few different discussions got going at once. I was just happy to cuddle close to Arrow and enjoy the familiarity. I worried that all too soon it would come to an end. Surely there was no time for drinks with friends when one had a rebellion to lead.

I laughed as Jett told the story about the fight that got us kicked off our label. She was such a feisty thing. I wondered how Sam would handle the wolf. In just a couple weeks, we would find out. Jett and Sam were solid though, and I didn’t worry for a moment about the two of them. They would find their way through this and come out the other side stronger for it.

I believed that I could say the same about Arrow and me. Our relationship felt strong. A true foundation we could stand on when the storms finally came our way. Because they would.

Already we had opposition, those who didn’t want us to be together. From Rowen to the Brotherhood to Koda, and who knew who else? There were more people against us than for us. That didn’t discourage me. If anything it drove me to prove them all wrong. Arrow and I, we wouldn’t let ourselves be defined by the labels and rules other people had decided for us. We would set our own rules no matter what we faced.

Arrow slung an arm around my shoulder and pulled me tighter against him. I tipped my face up to receive his kiss, savoring every second.

The future remained uncertain. But this, what we had, I’d never felt more sure of anything. If the Brotherhood forced me to defend it, if they forced me to rebel against their archaic rules... then so be it.

I would stand against them, and I knew that I wouldn’t stand alone.

Spike’s story continues in Rebel Heart Book 7, Prophecy Girl.
